OM USB minnen, Universal Serial Bus
USB minnen, Universal Serial Bus, är en standard för en snabb seriell databuss.
USB minnen utvecklades under första halvan av 1990-talet gemensamt av de ledande leverantörerna inom telekom- och persondatorindustrin. Tillsammans med Firewire slog USB igenom mot slutet av 1990-talet som en mer flexibel ersättare för serie- och parallellportarna samt i viss mån även för SCSI.
Både Firewire och USB minnen klarar fler enheter än vad som är praktiskt möjligt att hantera (127 st för USB). Skillnaden ligger i hur enheterna kopplas samman. Firewire använder oftast en kedja medan USB minnen kräver en port per enhet. Varje port kan emellertid delas med ett nav, en så kallad hub, och bildar alltså en stjärnnätstruktur. Både Firewire och USB minnen har blivit vedertagna standarder och återfinns idag på PC, Mac och Sun.
Vanliga användningsområden för USB minnen är att överföra information mellan dator och: Skrivare, digitalkameror, externa lagringsmeduim (tex hårddisk eller USB minnen), GPS, tangentbord och datormus.
USB-portar tillhandahåller en matningsspänning på 5 volt och lämnar upp till 500 milliampere. Det har utvecklats mindre vardagsredskap som använder USB-kontakten som strömkälla, exempelvis små dammsugare som är avsedda att rengöra tangentbord och små värmeplattor som används för att värma kaffe. Värt att tänka på är att strömförbrukningen i datorn ökar vilket leder till oönskad värmeutveckling som kan vara negativt för bärbara datorer.
